Commercial Radon Testing Services
As part of the purchase of a property, radon testing is now highly recommended by Health Canada and the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (CARST). Radon is an odourless and tasteless gas formed by the breakdown of uranium, a natural radioactive material found in soil, rock, and groundwater.
Radon released into the open air is not a concern. But in enclosed spaces, like basements and crawlspaces, high levels can accumulate and move up from the ground through cracks and holes in the foundation, at which point it becomes a risk to homeowners. In fact, it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in North America.
Radon testing services will identify if radon exists at potentially harmful levels on your property. There are several Health Ministry recommendations in regard to the detection and management of Radon, which we will help you navigate and implement.
Radon Testing Types
There are two general ways to test for radon:
Long term testing, in which testing devices are left in the building for more than 90 days. This method typically involves the use of “Alpha track” and “Electret” detectors. Long term testing provides a reading that is more likely to indicate the year-round average radon level in the building.
Short Term testing, in which test units are left in the building for less than 90 days. A short term test may be used to determine if further testing or appropriate action is needed.

Radon Testing in 3 Steps
ORTAM conducts radon testing services using strict quality assurance and quality control procedures, and methodologies based upon recommendations given by Health Canada and the Federal Provincial Territorial Radiation Protection Committee.
1 - Site Visit
Our qualified personnel visit your property and examine areas likely to be at risk for radon build-up.
2 - Installation of Test Units & Measurement
Following a thorough walk-through and examination of the building/property, test units are installed in appropriate locations to measure Radon levels.
3 - Analysis & Report
Based on the samples gathered, we will provide a fully analyzed report from an accredited laboratory.
